What is a personal assistant?
As a personal assistant (often shortened to PA),
you will work closely with senior managerial or executive staff to provide administrative support, usually on a one-to-one basis. Personal assistant careers are varied and you will play a pivotal role in helping a manager to make best use of their time with administrative and secretarial tasks.
An executive assistant works at a very senior level, either for a CEO or a Board director. Many of our PAs end up being the right-hand of a leading CEO or high profile individual and will be tasked with everything from project to event management, say Emily Bain and Claire Gray, co-founders of boutique secretarial and PA recruitment agency Bain and Gray. It's A fulfilling vocation in which candidates need to demonstrate real business acumen. What is great about the role of a personal assistant is the job varies depending on which sector you choose to work in. From the corporate city world to charities, councils and start-up firms, there?s so much scope to pick and choose the type of area you are interested in.
Hours tend to be 9am-5pm weekdays but working overtime is expected and some roles (like a celebrity PA) may require you to be on hand 24/7. Greater London Authority Senior PA Sally Russell, who has won several prestigious PA of the Year awards, says being flexible is key to being a great PA. ? The role of a personal assistant is such an important one in any business. PA duties can include everything from helping with time and daily management, scheduling of meetings, correspondence, and note-taking. The personal assistant can also expect to answer phone calls, take notes, schedule meetings and send emails on behalf of your manager as well as organise events.
There is also great career progression for personal assistants. You may start out as an administrative assistant but eventually you can progress to an executive assistant or company secretary. There's huge scope and you may also have the chance to gain new skills such as social media, law and payroll. And by working so closely with the management team, you will not only learn so much about the company but you will also play such an important role and gain so much experience in helping to run a business.
