Job Description Summary

MUSC Community Physicians (MCP) is an entity within the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) that provides healthcare to patients within the rural health network throughout the state of South Carolina. The Certified Medical Assistant performs multi‑skilled activities to support a decentralized patient‑centered approach to patient care and achieve desired outcomes.

Responsibilities

The Certified Medical Assistant reports to the Outpatient Clinic Manager.

- Interviews patients, measures vital signs (pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, weight, and height), and records or inputs information into patients' medical record.
- Prepares treatment rooms for examination of patients.
- Maintains annual competencies.
- Performs therapeutic procedures and makes accurate physical observations of patients.
- Communicates effectively both verbally and in writing.

Minimum Education and Experience

- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of an accredited medical assisting program with one year of patient care experience preferred.

Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations

- Certified through AMT, AAMA, NHA, or MedCA as a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA), Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), or NAHP.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification: American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers or equivalent, or American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.

Physical Requirements

- Perform job functions while standing and sitting.
- Perform job functions while walking and climbing stairs.
- Work from elevated areas, confined/cramped spaces, and kneeling positions.
- Perform gross motor activities with fingers and hands; firm grasping; repetitive motions with hands, wrists, elbows, and shoulders.
- Use lower extremities for balance and coordination.
- Reach in all directions and overhead.
- Lift and carry 50 lbs. unassisted; lift/lower objects 50 lbs. from or to the floor up to 36 inches unassisted; lift from 36" to overhead 25 lbs.; exert up to 50 lbs. of force.
- Assist in transfers of patients and other heavy loads following specified force requirements.
- Maintain vision, hearing acuity, fine motor movements, tolerance of stressful situations, willingness to work rotating shifts, overtime as required, and work in a latex‑safe environment.
- Maintain tactile and olfactory sensory functions; qualify for respirator use as required.
