About DRI

DRI, Inc. is a growing, certified Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) general contractor performing federal construction projects for agencies including the Department of Veterans Affairs and the National Park Service. We manage a portfolio of roughly $14 to $17 million in active federal contracts across the United States, with a project pipeline that is scaling toward $20M+ in annual revenue.

Our finance stack is modern and lean: QuickBooks Online, a structured Excel-based project tracking system, AI-assisted financial analysis, an offshore bookkeeper, and an outside CPA firm that prepares WIP schedules and tax filings. We are hiring our first Controller to own the financial oversight layer as we scale.

The Role

You will be DRI's financial control tower. The transaction-level bookkeeping is handled by ourbookkeeper, and annual WIP schedules and taxes are handled by our CPA firm. Your job iseverything in between: closing the books on a calendar, reconciling systems against each other, keeping project costs honest against budgets, keeping our cash forecast current, and catching problems (unapproved change orders, unbilled work, aging discrepancies, misapplied payments) while they are still small. You will report directly to the Vice President and work alongside our bookkeeper, whose work you will review and direct.

In addition, you will be a vital asset to the Project Managers and Site Superintendents assisting with ongoing project cost, budgets, and monitoring under/ over runs on projects.

Core Responsibilities

- Own the monthly close: drive a fixed close calendar; review and post accruals; deliver a clean P&L;, balance sheet, and job-cost reports by a set business day each month.
- Project cost control: maintain job-cost reports for every active contract; review vigente costs vs. budget weekly; investigate variances; flag cost activity that lacks an approved change order or purchase commitment.
- Change order & commitment discipline: maintain the open REA/change-order log; verify every contract modification is reflected in contract values, billings,



and budgets; ensure no scope change proceeds unbudgeted.
- Billing & receivables: own the progress-billing calendar across all projects; track pay application status through government payment portals (IPP); monitor A/R aging daily; escalate late federalpayments under Prompt Payment Act timelines; track retainage.
- Payables & cash: sequence subcontractor payments against project collections; keep A/P aging clean and reconciled (including vendor statement reconciliations); maintain the 12-month rolling cash flow forecast and update it weekly.
- Reconciliation & data integrity: keep QuickBooks Online, the project tracker, and the cash forecast in agreement: contract values, billed-to-date, cost-to-date, and margins must match across systems at all times.
- Bookkeeper oversight: review the bookkeeper's transaction coding, bank matching, and project cost tagging; establish and enforce coding standards (job-costing of bonds, project travel, and direct costs).
- Compliance support: support Davis-Bacon certified payroll tracking, subcontractor insurance/lien waiver tracking, and provide clean schedules to the CPA for WIP, tax, and bonding submissions.
- Reporting: produce a concise weekly financial package (cash, A/R, A/P, job margins, flags) for ownership, and support monthly reviews with variance commentary.

Required Qualifications

- 5+ years of accounting experience, including 2+ years in a controller, assistant controller, or senior accountant role with review responsibility over others' work.
- Construction accounting experience is required: job costing, percentage-of-completion revenue recognition, WIP schedules, retainage, and progress billing (AIA-style or federal pay applications).
- Hands-on expert in QuickBooks Online,



including projects/sub-customer job costing and class/location tracking.
- Advanced Excel: comfortable owning complex multi-tab workbooks with live formulas (SUMIFS, INDEX/MATCH, structured references).
- Experience serving U.S. clients and working with U.S. GAAP; excellent written and spoken English.
- Self-directed and process-minded: you build calendars, checklists, and controls without being asked, and you chase discrepancies to zero.
- Reliable full-time availability with at least 5 working hours per day overlapping U.S. Central Time, and dependable internet/workstation.

Strongly Preferred

- Prior work for a U.S. general contractor or construction outsourcing/BPO practice serving U.S. contractors.
- Familiarity with U.S. federal government contracting: pay applications through IPP or similar portals, Prompt Payment Act, Davis-Bacon certified payroll, retainage on federal work.
- CPA, CMA, or equivalent professional qualification.
- Experience with AI-assisted finance workflows and a willingness to work in a tech-forward process.

- $45,000 to $55,000 USD per year, paid monthly, as a full-time independent contractor engagement.
