Senior Geotechnical Engineer - Hydro & Dams

Position Summary

WSP is seeking a Senior Geotechnical Engineer - Hydro & Dams to join our multidisciplinary team. The successful candidate will lead the planning, analysis, design, and assessment of geotechnical aspects related to hydroelectric, dam, water resources, and major infrastructure projects. This position involves providing technical leadership throughout all project phases, including feasibility studies, detailed engineering, dam safety assessments, rehabilitation programs, construction support, and client advisory services.

The idóneo candidate will have more than 10 years of relevant experience in geotechnical engineering, with significant involvement in hydroelectric, dam, mining, water resources, or large civil infrastructure projects. Due to the global nature of the projects and stakeholders, advanced English and French language proficiency is required.

Key Responsibilities

- Lead and oversee geotechnical investigations, site characterization programs, and interpretation of subsurface conditions.
- Provide technical leadership in the design and evaluation of dams, embankments, foundations, retaining structures, tunnels, underground works, and hydraulic infrastructure.
- Perform and review advanced geotechnical analyses, including slope stability, seepage, settlement, deformation, bearing capacity, and foundation assessments.
- Lead dam safety evaluations, risk assessments, rehabilitation studies, and asset management initiatives.
- Develop geotechnical models and numerical analyses using industry-standard software and engineering methodologies.
- Prepare and review technical reports, engineering calculations, specifications, design documents, and construction packages.
- Provide senior-level technical guidance and mentorship to junior and intermediate engineers.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary project teams, including civil, structural, hydrotechnical, geological, environmental, and construction specialists.
- Review geological and geotechnical data and establish engineering recommendations for complex projects.
- Support construction activities through site inspections, construction monitoring,



contractor review, and resolution of field issues.
- Ensure compliance with applicable engineering standards, dam safety regulations, environmental requirements, and industry best practices.
- Participate in business development activities, including proposal preparation, client engagement, and project pursuits.
- Support project planning, budgeting, scheduling, resource allocation, and project risk management.
- Maintain effective communication with clients, project teams, contractors, and stakeholders in English and French.

Qualifications and Experience

Education

- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, Geological Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Master's Degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, Engineering Geology, or a related field is preferred.
- Ph.D. in Geotechnical Engineering or a related discipline is considered an asset.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng. or equivalent) designation is preferred.

Experience

- More than 10 years of professional experience in geotechnical engineering.
- Extensive experience supporting hydroelectric, dam, water resources, mining, or major infrastructure projects.
- Proven experience leading geotechnical studies, investigations, engineering design, and technical reviews.
- Significant experience in dam engineering, embankment dams, water‑retaining structures, and dam safety programs.
- Experience supporting projects through feasibility, detailed design, construction, commissioning, and operational phases.
- Experience managing multidisciplinary engineering teams and interacting directly with clients and stakeholders.

Technical Skills

- Advanced knowledge of soil mechanics, rock mechanics, foundation engineering, seepage analysis,



and slope stability assessment.
- Extensive experience with geotechnical software such as GeoStudio, PLAXIS, Rocscience Suite, FLAC, RS2, Slide, Settle3, or equivalent.
- Strong understanding of international dam safety guidelines, regulations, and geotechnical engineering standards.
- Experience conducting advanced numerical modeling and geotechnical risk assessments.
- Ability to review and approve complex engineering calculations, reports, and technical recommendations.
- Familiarity with construction practices, field investigations, and instrumentation monitoring programs.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and engineering documentation tools.
- Strong technical writing, presentation, and client communication capabilities.

Language Requirements

- Advanced English proficiency (written and verbal) – Mandatory.
- Advanced French proficiency (written and verbal) – Mandatory.
- Ability to communicate effectively in multicultural and international project environments.
- Ability to prepare technical reports, engineering studies, presentations, proposals, and client communications in both English and French.
