Overall Purpose of the Job

The role of the Developer is to improve the functionality of IT support systems, increasing efficiency. Their job is to analyse software requirements, research, design, develop, and test operating systems-level software, compilers, and network distribution software.

Key Activities and Accountabilities

1. Design and develop software systems, using scientific analysis and mathematical models to predict and measure outcome and consequences of design or modification to systems.
2. Modify existing software to correct errors, to adapt it to new hardware or to upgrade interfaces and improve performance.
3. Liaise with end user representatives to gather information on speed, performance and usability of systems, and formulate specifications for improvements.
4. Consult with engineering staff to evaluate interface between hardware and software, develop specifications and performance requirements and resolve customer problems.

Develop and direct software system programming and development of documentation (user, code), testing and validation procedures.
6. Consult with customers and/or other departments on project status, proposals and technical issues such as software system design and maintenance, user issues and resolution.
7. Co-ordinate installation of software systems and liaise with user representatives and project managers on system specification, activities and status.
8. Monitor user feedback to ensure system operates in conformance with specifications.
9. Evaluate factors such as reporting formats required, cost constraints, and need for security restrictions to determine hardware/software configuration.

Job Knowledge and Qualifications

1. Degree-qualified or equivalent in Computer science/engineering/maths
2. Certification in relevant vendor software products, e.g. MCPD 3. 5+ years experience in a similar role
