Spoken and written language is a fundamental way humans connect. MPC’s Language & Communications programs build linguistic fluency, critical thinking abilities, writing craft and speaking skills.
American Sign Language
Would you like to learn a unique visual, spatial, and gestural language, gain a new perspective on communication and culture, and connect with members of the Deaf community? Join MPC’s American Sign Language program.
Communications Studies
Developing and improving relationships, speaking effectively in a public setting, interacting with people from diverse cultures, and working collaboratively with others all require skills you can develop and refine in MPC’s Communication Studies program.
Creative Writing
Explore your imagination and strengthen your writing skills in classes focused on fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and the novel. Submit writing to the campus literary magazine and edit others’ work.
English
Through study of literature and practice of literary and expository writing, MPC English students learn to think critically, read well, and communicate clearly – skills that are in demand in a wide range of fields.
English as a Second Language
Are you a non-native speaker of English who wants to strengthen your English skills? The English as a Second Language (ESL)
program has six levels of instruction, from beginning to university-level courses.
French

Explore linguistics, the scientific study of the nature and structure of human communication. MPC’s program offers one of the widest ranges of linguistics courses available at any U.S. community college.
Spanish
Learn the fastest-growing language in California and the second most widely-spoken language worldwide. MPC’s program offers courses for Spanish speakers as well as specialized instruction in interpretation and translation.
Translation & Interpretation
MPC’s Translation & Interpretation program prepares bilingual students for careers in professional interpreting and translating through real-world practice and a strong foundation in both theory and technique.
