Position Overview
The Structural Steel Detailer supports the technical execution of structural steel detailing projects by developing accurate 3D models, fabrication drawings, erection drawings, and project-related material information using SDS2. This role reviews contract documents, incorporates project requirements and revisions, and prepares detailing deliverables that support steel fabrication and erection activities.
Working within the Project Execution team, the Structural Steel Detailer collaborates with modelers, checkers, project engineers, and project management personnel to maintain accurate project information and identify detailing issues requiring coordination or clarification. This position also supports erection drawing development and material take-off activities as workload requires, providing flexibility across project execution workflows while continuing to develop technical detailing capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
Structural Steel Modeling and Detailing
- Generate and edit fabrication shop drawings for use by steel fabricators in manufacturing individual structural steel components.
- Review structural and architectural drawings, specifications, and other contract documents to understand project scope and detailing requirements.
- Maintain consistency between contract documents and associated detailing deliverables.
Erection Drawings and Material Support
- Create and update erection drawings used to support field assembly and erection of structural steel.
- Support erection drawing development and editing activities based on project schedules and workload requirements.
- Prepare material take-offs and related project information to support fabrication, procurement, and erection activities as assigned.
- Coordinate detailing information with modelers, checkers, and other Project Execution team members to maintain consistency across project deliverables.
Revisions and Drawing Coordination
- Interpret and incorporate approval comments, contract changes, RFI responses, and other authorized revisions into
- Update affected shop and erection drawings to reflect approved project changes.
- Coordinate revisions across related model elements and drawings to maintain consistency and accuracy.
- Identify and escalate discrepancies, constructability concerns, and detailing questions to the appropriate project team members for review and resolution.
- Incorporate checking comments and technical feedback into drawings in accordance with project requirements.
Fabrication and Project Deliverables
- Prepare required project lists, documents, and electronic files to support fabrication and erection activities.
- Generate shop and field bolt information, mill order information, CNC files, KSS files, Tekla PowerFab files, and other required project outputs as applicable.
- Perform a self-review of assigned drawings, and project outputs for completeness, consistency, and accuracy before submitting work for formal checking.
- Address checking comments and required corrections accurately and in a timely manner.
- Maintain organized project information and follow established JITECH detailing standards, workflows, and quality requirements.
- Take ownership of assigned work and support continuous improvement of detailing quality, accuracy, and efficiency.
Qualifications
- Associate degree or higher in Civil Engineering Technology,
Structural Engineering Technology, Drafting, Construction, or a related field is preferred.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in structural steel detailing, steel fabrication drafting, or a related structural steel role.
- Experience developing structural steel models and fabrication drawings using SDS2.
- Experience preparing or supporting shop drawings, erection drawings, material take-offs, and fabrication-related project deliverables.
- Ability to read and interpret structural and architectural drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
- Working knowledge of structural steel detailing practices, steel member dimensions and properties, and relevant provisions of the AISC Steel Construction Manual.
- Familiarity with ANSI/AISC 360-22, AWS D1.1:2020, AWS welding practices, and
- International Building Code requirements as they relate to structural steel detailing is preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Microsoft Teams, and Microsoft Planner.
- Proficiency with Bluebeam for construction drawing and document review.
- Excellent written and spoken English communication skills.
