Open CallLatin AmericaCaribbeanIdentity The 59th ICA Congreso Internacional de Americanistas invites contributions for a broad discussion of the arts in Latin America and the Caribbean across different historical periods, from pre-colonial cultures and the Portuguese and Spanish colonial eras to contemporary practices. The panel seeks to move beyond approaches focused exclusively on decolonization, encouraging broader perspectives on the historical, political, cultural, and aesthetic complexities of the region.

Submissions are encouraged to engage with memory, history, and orality, as well as transnational connections, exchanges, and tensions between different territories and cultural contexts. Contributions may also address artistic practices produced outside Latin America and the Caribbean when they engage with themes relevant to Latin American contexts. Comparative, transnational, and interdisciplinary approaches are welcome.

The call is open to research and proposals addressing a wide range of artistic media and practices, including painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, cinema, video, performance, installation, sound, digital art, and traditional or experimental visual cultures. The organizers are also interested in subjects including Indigenous artistic practices and ancestry; Latin American modernisms, avant-gardes, muralism, Indigenism, Concrete and Neo-Concrete art; contemporary art; curatorial practices; art criticism; archives and collections; cultural heritage; exhibitions and the circulation of Latin American and Caribbean art.
