Role Summary

This profile is for the engineer(s) responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining a

HiveMQ deployment in production — covering broker configuration and clustering, security setup, protocol/data integrations, and ongoing operations.

Key Responsibilities

- Design and configure the HiveMQ broker/cluster topology (sizing, high availability, failover) for the target environment (on-prem, cloud, or hybrid).
- Implement authentication and authorization (TLS/mTLS, client certificates, JWT/OAuth, LDAP) using the HiveMQ Enterprise Security Extension or equivalent.
- Build and maintain topic structures, Data Hub policies/transformations, and any custom extensions needed for the use case.
- Stand up and operate integrations (Kafka/Confluent, cloud pub/sub, databases, MES/ERP/SCADA where relevant).
- Deploy, monitor, and troubleshoot the platform in production (logging, metrics, alerting, capacity planning).
- Own day-2 operations: upgrades, backups, incident response, and performance tuning.

Core Technical Skills MQTT & Messaging Fundamentals

- Solid working knowledge of MQTT 3.1.1 and MQTT 5: QoS levels, session handling, retained messages, shared subscriptions, last will, and topic design best practices.
- Understanding of publish/subscribe architecture and event-driven design patterns.

HiveMQ Platform Depth

- Broker and cluster architecture, replication, and failover behavior.
- Enterprise Security Extension (ESE): realms, authentication/authorization managers, X.509/JWT/LDAP preprocessors, RBAC.
- Data Hub: data validation, policies, and transformations for governing message streams.
- Bridge and Kafka extensions for connecting HiveMQ to downstream systems.




- Edge protocol adapters if the deployment involves OT/industrial data sources (OPC UA, Modbus, Sparkplug B).
- HiveMQ Control Center for monitoring, client management, and diagnostics.
- Comfort reading/writing or extending a HiveMQ extension when a custom integration or business rule is required.

Deployment & Infrastructure

- Containerization and orchestration: Docker, Kubernetes (StatefulSets, Helm, the HiveMQOperator).
- Infrastructure as Code: Terraform and/or Ansible for repeatable environment provisioning.
- Monitoring/observability stack: Prometheus, Grafana, log aggregation.
- CI/CD pipelines for config-as-code and controlled rollout of changes.

Programming & Scripting

- At least one of Java/Kotlin (HiveMQ extension SDK is Java-based), Python, or JavaScript/Node.js for scripting, automation, and light custom development.
- Comfortable with REST APIs for automating broker configuration and operational tasks.

Security

- TLS/mTLS certificate management and rotation.
- Enterprise authentication integration (SSO/OIDC, LDAP/AD, JWT).
- General familiarity with network security concepts: firewalls, segmentation, VPNs/PrivateLink.

Cloud & Networking

- Familiarity with at least one major cloud provider (AWS, Azure, or GCP) if the deployment is cloud-hosted or hybrid.




- Core networking fundamentals: TCP/IP, TLS, WebSockets, load balancing, private connectivity options.

Integration & Data Engineering

- Experience integrating streaming data with downstream systems (Kafka/Confluent, databases, data lakes, or analytics platforms).
- For industrial/IoT use cases: familiarity with Unified Namespace concepts, ISA-95, and Sparkplug B is a strong plus.

Recommended Experience Level

- 3+ years in software/platform engineering, DevOps, or infrastructure roles, ideally with prior exposure to messaging systems (MQTT, Kafka, RabbitMQ, or similar).
- Direct experience standing up and operating a clustered, production-grade middleware or messaging platform is the strongest predictor of success.
- For OT/industrial deployments, prior exposure to plant-floor systems (PLCs, SCADA, historians) is valuable but not mandatory if paired with a strong IT/platform background.

Recommended Enablement

- HiveMQ University courses and certifications (MQTT Essentials, HiveMQ platform fundamentals, security/ESE, Data Hub) to close any product-specific gaps quickly.
- Hands-on sandbox time with HiveMQ Cloud or a self-managed cluster before the engagement goes live.

Nice-to-Have / Bonus Skills

- Multi-cloud or hybrid deployment experience.
- Prior work on a partner-led HiveMQ implementation or similar MQTT broker (EMQX, Mosquitto) migration.
- Experience with regulated environments (GxP, ISO 27001/SOC 2 adjacent controls) if applicable to the customer's industry.
