Senior Tax Analyst

First in Solutions / NW Family Group

Medellín, Colombia · Supporting a U.S. company · Full-time · Immediate hire

First in Solutions and NW Family Group are recruiting a bilingual (English / Spanish) Staff or Senior Tax Analyst to sit with our Medellín, Colombia team and support a U.S.-based multi-state retail energy company. The role reports to the client’s Director of Tax in the United States.

This is a U.S. tax role, not a Colombian tax role. You will work U.S. federal, state, and local tax rules for a company that sells electricity and natural gas to residential and commercial customers across multiple U.S. states. You must already be familiar with — or ready to work daily in — United States tax law, U.S. sales and use tax, multi-state compliance, and U.S. income tax provision concepts.

English fluency is required. All work product, research memos, workpapers, emails, and calls with the U.S. Director of Tax and U.S. stakeholders are in English. Spanish is needed for the Medellín office and day-to-day team coordination. This seat is only a fit for a truly bilingual candidate.

Staff and Senior are both in play. If you are earlier in your career and the degree, Excel, recon, research, English fluency, and deadline ownership are there, prior tax years can be waived. Prior U.S. tax coursework, U.S. multi-state sales/use work, or experience supporting a U.S. company from Colombia is a strong plus.

About the role

You will own (or review) multi-state U.S. indirect tax compliance and help keep taxability, rates, and jurisdiction mapping accurate in the client’s billing systems. A smaller slice of the job supports U.S. federal and state income tax provision work.

Split is roughly

- 75–80% U.S. sales, use, utility users’, and gross receipts tax
- 20–25% U.S. income tax support (ASC 740 data, apportionment, estimates, extensions, annual reports)

Work location: Medellín, Colombia Hiring / client company: United States

Reporting line: Director of Tax (U.S.)

Language: Fluent English and fluent Spanish required

What you’ll do

U.S. sales, use & utility taxes (primary)

- Prepare, review, and/or file monthly, quarterly, and annual U.S. sales and use tax, utility users’ tax,

and gross receipts tax returns across multiple states and local jurisdictions
- Maintain and validate U.S. tax rates, jurisdiction mappings, and customer taxability in billing systems, including address-level and ZIP+4 assignment and local rate changes
- Research taxability of U.S. energy products and bill components (commodity charges, minimum usage charges, service and administrative fees) for residential and commercial customers, and document positions under U.S. state and local law
- Reconcile tax collected in billing to the general ledger and to filed U.S. returns; investigate and resolve variances
- Monitor U.S. legislative and rate changes at the state and local level and assess impact on billing and compliance
- Respond to U.S. jurisdiction notices, support audits, and manage exemption and resale certificate documentation
- Build and improve compliance workflows, including automating data preparation, lookups, and cross-checks on large billing extracts

U.S. income tax support

- Gather data for U.S. federal and state income tax provision (ASC 740) workpapers, including current and deferred calculations
- Help with U.S. state apportionment, estimated payments, extensions, and annual report filings

What you’ll bring

Required

- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- Fluent English and fluent Spanish — spoken and written. You must be able to run calls, write tax positions, and deliver workpapers in English to a U.S. tax director
- Working knowledge of United States tax law, especially multi-state sales and use tax and U.S. compliance calendars
- 0–4 years of tax experience with hands-on multi-state U.S. sales and use tax compliance
- Staff candidates: prior tax years can be excluded if every other required item is solid, including English fluency and U.S. tax familiarity

- Ability to work from Medellín, Colombia on U.S. hours as needed for close, filings, and the Director of Tax
- Advanced Excel (lookups, pivot tables, large files) and comfort reconciling high-volume transactional data
- Strong research and writing skills in English
- Detail orientation and ownership of deadlines on a recurring U.S. compliance calendar

Preferred

- Experience supporting a U.S. company from Latin America
- Energy, utilities, telecom, or another regulated or billing-heavy industry
- Familiarity with U.S. utility users’ taxes, gross receipts or franchise taxes, and local-level rate structures

Who this is for A bilingual professional in Medellín who can operate as part of a U.S. tax function. You like precision. You do not shrug at a rate mismatch or a ZIP that mapped to the wrong locality. You are fine living in extracts, pivots, and recon files. You write positions in English so the next person — or a U.S. auditor — can follow the logic. You would rather fix the workflow than babysit a broken one every month. Senior-level candidates should be ready to review returns, take the harder U.S. research items, and help raise the quality of the calendar. Staff-level candidates should be ready to learn the U.S. energy bill stack fast and own assigned jurisdictions cleanly.

If English is not fluent, this is not the role.
