Solena Collective
Colombia
Solena Collective is a global movement where women come together locally to support one another, learn, share skills, and take collective action for gender equality. Through Solena Circles, women identify the issues that matter in their communities and take action with support from a global network.
As Circles work on topics such as gender‑based violence, reproductive rights, political participation, migration, and community safety, Solena ensures women can act courageously while understanding risks, making informed choices, and protecting those involved.
About the Role
We are seeking a Volunteer Community Care & Safety Lead (unpaid) to build and coordinate Solena’s safety function during our pilot phase and beyond. This is a remote, adaptable, volunteer role within Solena’s global team.
During the pilot phase, you will directly support early Circles, coordinate safety reviews, manage concerns and escalations, and bring in specialist or local expertise when needed. You will also build the broader Community Care & Safety Panel, develop tools and processes, and help shape Solena’s long‑term safety system.
As Solena grows, the role will evolve toward coordinating a distributed network of Panel Members, regional contacts, and thematic experts — ensuring consistent, context‑aware support across Circles.
This role is not about eliminating risk or restricting women’s activism. It is about helping Circles engage with risk consciously, responsibly, and with clear boundaries.
Key Responsibilities1. Lead Community Care & Safety during the pilot phase
- Serve as the main point of contact for safety questions.
- Support Circles with medium‑ and high‑risk activities.
- Coordinate safety reviews and determine when specialist input is needed.
- Manage safety pauses, escalation, and follow‑up actions.
- Maintain proportionate documentation.
- Identify gaps and strengthen systems as pilots progress.
2. Support Circles in assessing and managing risk
- Guide Circles through Solena’s Pre‑Action Safety Check.
- Help identify affected groups and foreseeable harms.
- Support thinking around voluntary participation, informed consent, visibility, retaliation, legal/political risks, safeguarding, and referrals.
- Determine whether activities can proceed, need redesign, require partner support, or fall outside Solena’s scope.
- Prioritize safer redesign rather than stopping higher‑risk work whenever possible.
3. Build Solena’s Community Care & Safety Panel
- Identify and recruit Panel Members with diverse expertise.
- Build relationships with specialists, local partners, and regional advisors.
- Develop consultation processes and onboarding materials.
- Ensure local context informs decision‑making.
- Gradually shift appropriate reviews to Panel Members.
4. Develop practical safety systems
- Create clear, usable guidance and tools for Circles.
- Refine the Pre‑Action Safety Check based on pilot learning.
- Develop disclosure and referral guidance (violence, trauma, crisis support).
- Establish participation and consent norms for higher‑risk activities.
- Support development of referral pathways with qualified organizations.
- Build processes for escalation, review, and follow‑up.
5. Coordinate the long‑term Community Care & Safety system
- Match cases with the right Panel Members or specialists.
- Ensure consistency across Circles and contexts.
- Escalate serious or legally complex concerns.
- Maintain oversight of cases and follow‑through.
- Support and train regional safety contacts.
- Identify patterns and feed learning into Solena’s systems.
- Maintain independence of the safety function to recommend slowing down or declining support when necessary.
6. Maintain careful documentation and learning
- Keep proportionate records of reviews, decisions, and required actions.
- Avoid unnecessary collection of sensitive personal data.
- Ensure survivor information is protected.
- Identify recurring issues and integrate learning into onboarding, training, resources, and safeguarding.
Who We’re Looking For
You may have experience in:
- Safeguarding, community safety, gender‑based violence, survivor support
- Feminist organizing, human rights, ethical risk, community development
- Coordinating complex or sensitive processes
You should be able to:
- Recognize when to bring in specialist expertise
- Make thoughtful decisions where no risk‑free option exists
- Balance safety with respect for women’s autonomy
- Communicate clearly across cultures
- Handle sensitive information discreetly
- Build and coordinate a network of diverse experts
- Raise concerns or recommend slowing down when needed
Experience in global or cross‑cultural settings is especially valuable. You do not need to provide counseling, legal advice, medical care, crisis response, or investigations. Those remain with qualified professionals and partner organizations.
Our Principles
- Women can make informed decisions about risk.
- Participation in higher‑risk activities must be voluntary.
- Risk should not be transferred to people who did not choose it.
- Local context matters.
- Circles should not be pushed into specialist roles.
- Safer redesign should be explored before ruling out an activity.
- Solena can support values behind an action even if a specific activity cannot use Solena’s name or resources.
- Safety must remain independent enough to influence decisions.
Become part of a global network committed to supporting women’s leadership, shared responsibility, and safer pathways to change.
