Software Engineer I, Back End (Kotlin / Java)

About the role

We are looking for a Software Engineer I to join the product development team behind the client's Insider Risk Management product. You will work as a backend developer on critical services that process billions of events from customers around the world, writing new services and APIs and maintaining existing services hosted on AWS. You will work with UX, Product Management, Information Experience and other development teams to deliver features that bring real value to customers.





This is an AI-first engineering organization: teams use AI-powered tools across coding, testing, documentation and operations, and look for engineers who champion their adoption and help establish new ways of working.

What you'll do

- Design and implement code, independently and with teammates, with monitoring, supportability and testability in mind.
- Write unit and integration tests for your team's code.
- Test, debug and troubleshoot across the technology stack.
- Write infrastructure as code and manage deployments of the services your team owns.
- Help with production issues and escalated customer questions, and take part in the team's on-call rotation.
- Document your code, write design documents and review those of others.
- Demo progress on team deliverables.
- Take part in story mapping sessions and turn requirements into cohesive designs, identifying gaps and contradictions.
- Contribute to process improvements within engineering.
- Take part in design discussions and code reviews, asking questions, contributing and accepting feedback.
- Learn new things and share them with your team.
- Collaborate with product owners, UI/UX designers, QA analysts, technical writers and customer champions.

Requirements

The client cares as much about your ability to learn as your current skill set. Strong candidates will have experience across many of these areas, without necessarily checking every box.

Required

- 1–2 years of professional software engineering experience, focused on backend development.
- Experience with Kotlin (the team's primary language) or Java.
- Experience with testing frameworks.
- Experience with data stores such as PostgreSQL or Elasticsearch.
- Familiarity with continuous integration and deployment concepts.
- Experience with Agile or lean development processes.
- The discipline and rigor to deliver critical features.
- Comfortable owning deliverables as part of a team, offering and asking for help when needed.
- Comfortable working with non-technical colleagues.
- Passion for building systems that work well.
- Able to explain technical ideas to peers in writing and verbally, in English.
