Plumbing Preconstruction Engineer – Remote | Colombia
Company: MCI
Location: Colombia – Remote
Employment Type: Full-Time
Discipline: Plumbing / Hydraulics / Construction Preconstruction
About the Role
MCI is seeking a Plumbing Preconstruction Engineer to join our team remotely from Colombia and support the preconstruction and estimating of U.S.-based plumbing projects.
This is a technical position requiring a strong understanding of plumbing systems, hydraulic principles, construction drawings, quantity takeoffs, and estimating. The ideal candidate will have an engineering background and be able to analyze plumbing systems, understand system requirements, identify potential design or scope issues, and accurately quantify materials and equipment.
The selected candidate will work closely with MCI's preconstruction, estimating, and project management teams throughout the bidding and preconstruction process.
Key Responsibilities
- Review and interpret plumbing drawings, specifications, schedules, details, and project requirements.
- Perform detailed plumbing quantity takeoffs for piping, fittings, valves, fixtures, equipment, insulation, and associated systems.
- Develop material and labor estimates for plumbing scopes of work.
- Review domestic water, sanitary, waste and vent, storm drainage, and other plumbing systems.
- Apply hydraulic principles when reviewing and evaluating plumbing systems.
- Review pipe sizing, flow rates, pressure requirements, pressure losses, fixture units, and system demands.
- Assist in evaluating domestic water distribution and drainage system requirements.
- Identify potential design conflicts, missing information, constructability concerns, and scope gaps.
- Prepare RFIs and technical questions based on drawing and specification reviews.
- Assist in developing plumbing scopes of work and subcontractor/vendor bid packages.
- Obtain and evaluate vendor and subcontractor quotations.
- Perform bid leveling and ensure proposals include the required plumbing scope.
- Assist with value engineering and alternative material or system evaluations.
- Coordinate plumbing scope with architectural,
structural, mechanical, fire protection, civil, and electrical drawings.
- Maintain accurate and organized estimating and preconstruction documentation.
- Support project handoff from preconstruction to the operations/project management team.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Sanitary Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- Strong knowledge of plumbing systems and hydraulic principles.
- Experience with plumbing design, estimating, preconstruction, engineering, or construction.
- Ability to read and interpret detailed plumbing construction drawings and specifications.
- Understanding of hydraulic calculations, flow, pressure, pipe sizing, friction loss, and water distribution systems.
- Knowledge of sanitary waste and vent systems.
- Ability to perform accurate plumbing quantity takeoffs.
- Strong mathematical and analytical skills.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to identify inconsistencies between drawings, specifications, and project requirements.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
- Ability to communicate professionally in English.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects and deadlines in a remote environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with U.S. plumbing construction projects.
- Familiarity with U.S. plumbing codes and standards, including the Florida Plumbing Code, International Plumbing Code (IPC), and/or Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC).
- Experience with commercial, multifamily, hospitality, or similar plumbing construction.
- Experience with plumbing estimating and labor/material costing.
- Experience with Bluebeam Revu or similar takeoff software.
- Experience reviewing plumbing equipment schedules and manufacturer data.
- Knowledge of plumbing fixture requirements and water demand calculations.
- Experience coordinating plumbing systems with other MEP disciplines.
- Experience working with U.S.-based contractors, engineers, or clients.
English Requirement - Professional English proficiency is required. This position involves regular communication with MCI team members, vendors, subcontractors, engineers, and other project stakeholders in the United States.
Candidates must be comfortable
- Participating in meetings in English.
- Reading U.S. construction drawings and specifications.
- Writing professional emails and RFIs.
- Discussing plumbing systems and technical construction issues in English.
What We're Looking For: We are looking for an engineer who understands how plumbing systems actually work, not simply someone who can perform takeoffs.
The idóneo candidate can review a plumbing drawing and understand the engineering behind the system—how water is distributed, how piping is sized, how pressure and flow affect the system, how sanitary and vent systems function, and how the design translates into an actual construction scope and cost.
We value candidates who are analytical, detail-oriented, proactive, organized, and willing to ask questions when something does not make sense.
Work Arrangement
- 100% remote position based in Colombia
- Full-time
- Long-term opportunity
- Regular collaboration with MCI's U.S.-based team
- Candidates must be available during working hours that provide significant overlap with the U.S. team.
How to Apply Please submit your resume in English through Indeed.
In your application, please highlight your experience with:
- Plumbing engineering or design
- Hydraulics and hydraulic calculations
- Plumbing construction
- Quantity takeoffs and estimating
- Domestic water systems
- Sanitary, waste, and vent systems
- U.S. plumbing codes or construction projects
- Bluebeam or other estimating/takeoff software
